Scan-to-earn is the backbone of most influencer programmes. A painter opens a tin, scans the code inside the lid and sees points arrive on the phone. The member gets an instant reward, and the brand gets something it rarely had before: a record of who used which product, where and when.
Who wrote this guide
The EZ Solutions team wrote this guide. We build Engage360, which runs scan-based programmes for product companies. The steps below describe how such schemes work end to end.
How do QR code rewards work?
They work by giving every unit of a product its own code. When a member scans the code, the system checks that it is genuine and unused, marks it as used, and adds points for that product and that member’s type. One code, one reward, once.
Step 1: generate codes in batches
Codes are created in batches, one batch per product and print run. Each batch knows its product, so a scan always earns the right points. The brand exports the batch in a print-ready file for the printer or packing line.
Step 2: print codes where members will find them
Where the code goes matters as much as the code itself:
- Inside the pack or under a peel-off label, so only the person who opened the product can scan it.
- On a coupon in the carton, for products where packaging space is short.
- Away from the barcode, so shop staff do not scan the wrong code at the counter.
Step 3: scan on the app
The member scans with the brand’s app. Points appear straight away, set by the product point matrix for that member type. Running schemes, such as double points on a launch product, apply on top automatically.
Step 4: handle wrong scans
Sometimes a scan should not count: a damaged product returned, a test pack, a code scanned by the wrong member. Reversing a scan removes its points and keeps a record of why. Reversals should be the exception, and each one should be traceable.
Fraud with product codes, and how to stop it
Codes attract cheating because they carry value. The common tricks are copying codes, collecting unused packs from shops, and many accounts belonging to one person. The defences are straightforward:
- Single-use codes, so a copied code fails once the original is scanned.
- Hidden codes, printed where only the user of the product sees them.
- KYC on every member, with duplicate checks on phone numbers and bank accounts.
- Scan activity reports, to spot one member scanning far more than usual.
How Engage360 runs scan-to-earn
Engage360 covers the full path from code to payout:
- Unique QR batches per product, with print-ready export.
- Scan activity and reversals, each recorded.
- A product point matrix per member type, and schemes on top.
- Member KYC and duplicate checks, before points turn into money.
- Rewards or bank and UPI payouts, approved and audited.
Brands that run trade programmes as well can mix scans with invoice claims; the dealer loyalty programme guide covers that side.
