Building one app twice, once for Android and once for iOS, doubles a lot of the work. Flutter app development avoids that by using a single codebase for both. This guide explains where Flutter fits business apps and where it does not.

Who wrote this guide

The EZ Solutions team wrote this guide. Our mobile app development team builds Android and iOS apps for customers, field staff, dealers and members, and our products such as Engage360 use branded member apps.

What is Flutter?

Flutter is an open-source framework from Google. Developers write the app once in the Dart language, and Flutter draws the screens from widgets, which are small building blocks such as buttons, lists and forms. The same code then runs on Android and iOS.

When does Flutter app development fit?

Flutter fits when the app is mostly screens that show and collect data:

  • Order taking, billing and approval apps for staff.
  • Member or customer apps with sign-in, points, bookings or tickets.
  • Field apps that capture photos, locations and forms.
  • Dashboards and tracking screens.

Because both platforms share one codebase, features reach Android and iOS users at the same time, and the screens look and behave the same.

When is native development better?

Native code is the safer choice when an app depends heavily on specialised phone hardware, advanced camera processing, or the newest platform features on the day they are released. Many projects use Flutter for most screens and add small native modules for the exceptions.

How does it compare on cost and time?

One codebase usually means one team and one test plan, which shortens the build compared with two native apps. The saving is largest for apps with ordinary screens. See mobile app development cost for the other factors behind a quote.

What should be planned before the build?

  1. The users and the one workflow the first version must support.
  2. The backend the app calls, covered in API integration.
  3. Which phone features are needed: camera, location, notifications or offline storage.
  4. The store accounts and review time for each platform.

How does testing work?

Cross-platform does not remove the need to test on real devices. Each platform has its own screen sizes, system versions and behaviours, so testing covers a range of phones before every release.

How EZ Solutions builds with Flutter

The team starts with a clickable design, builds the app and its backend together, and releases in short cycles with a demo every two weeks. The client owns the source code and the store listings.
